Moonspell – A great Heavy Metal Band

With almost twenty years of life, Moonspell is one of the greatest heavy metal bands that Portugal has ever known.

The quality of the lyrics and the great sonority of this heavy metal band has been recognized with several awards from different institutions, including MTV in 2006. The lyrics of Moonspell are written by its vocalist Fernando Ribeiro that, besides the lyrics, wrote three books of poems that have been a sales success.

In 1989, the band started with the name “Morbid God”. A few years after they changed the name of band to Moonspell. The first biggest Moonspell success came on 1 April 1995, when they released the album named Wolfheart. In this album, it is possible to find three different metal styles, like Folk, Dark and Doom Metal. All the tracks but two (Ataegina and Trebaruna) are in English. The refrain of the music “Alma Mater” is in Portuguese. This album represented one of the biggest musical breakthroughs in Portugal.

After Wolfheart, Irreligious has been a great achievement. This album, released in 1996, has musics that have been an enormous success, like Opium and Full Moon Madness. The music Opium cites a famous Portuguese poet called Fernando Pessoa. The videoclip of this Moonspell music has been banned from Germany because the authorities considered that video promoted the abuse of drugs. In spite of that, Opium is one of the best known musics of Moonspell and it has been another great success of this heavy metal band.
Another well known album is Memorial. Memorial has been an enormous sales success in Portugal (Moonspell received a gold award for this) and the most known songs are Luna, Blood Tells, Finisterra and Sanguine.

In the heavy metal world, Moonspell can be considered Doom, Gothic or even Dark Metal.
In the next weeks, Moonspell will start an acoustic tour called “Sombra” and they are going to play in ten different cities of Portugal.
